What is the maximum compensation India Post is liable to pay for a lost or damaged parcel?
India Post's compensation for lost parcels depends on which system was used. For uninsured Speed Post: double the booking charges or ₹1,000, whichever is less. For insured articles: up to the insured value, not exceeding actual value, with a maximum of ₹5 lakh from 1 April 2026. But — as established in Part 8 — India Post does not independently determine actual value for numismatic notes. Documentation determines whether you recover face value or collectible value.
The two-system recap — applied to loss and damage
Part 8 established the two compensation systems in detail. This chapter applies those systems specifically to loss and damage scenarios. An uninsured Speed Post parcel containing a ₹100 note worth ₹8,000 — lost — generates ₹200 maximum compensation (2× ₹100 booking charges). An insured Speed Post parcel insured for ₹8,000 — lost — generates up to ₹8,000 compensation provided the sender can establish that the actual value of the lost note was ₹8,000 through documentation.
Consumer forum route — beyond the postal compensation framework
For India Post losses, the consumer forum route is available beyond the postal compensation ceiling. Multiple NCDRC and consumer commission judgments have confirmed that Speed Post senders are consumers under the Consumer Protection Act 2019, and that India Post cannot shelter behind Section 6 immunity for Speed Post. The forum may award: the full value of the lost item if established through documentation; compensation for mental agony and harassment; and costs.
The Post Master, Manimajra v. Ripan Kumar (District Forum, January 2020) awarded ₹29,042 as the actual value of goods sent through Speed Post, plus ₹10,000 for mental agony. The NCDRC New India Assurance judgment (June 2025) confirmed that compensation must match real value at time of loss, not assumptions or face value. For a numismatic collector who can document the genuine collectible value of a lost note — through purchase invoice and photographs — the consumer forum can award that value regardless of India Post's standard compensation ceiling.
Judicial Authority Post Master, Manimajra v. Ripan Kumar · District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission · 10 January 2020 India Post directed to pay ₹29,042 as actual value of goods sent through Speed Post plus ₹10,000 for mental agony. Speed Post sender is a consumer. Section 6 immunity does not apply to Speed Post. Actual market value — not postal compensation ceiling — determines compensation where evidence establishes value. |
Damage vs loss — different rules
For damage to a parcel that arrives: the claim is for the diminution in value — the difference between the value when sent (established by pre-posting photographs and purchase invoice) and the value when received (established by photographs of the damaged state and an expert assessment). India Post's compensation framework applies the same 'not exceeding actual value' principle — with the consumer forum available for inadequate responses.
Critical: for damaged parcels received, the complaint must be filed with India Post within 2 days of receipt under the Post Office Regulations 2024. This 2-day window is absolute under postal regulations. The consumer forum 2-year limitation runs independently — but the postal complaint should be filed within 2 days regardless.

India Post compensation: uninsured Speed Post = ₹200 or ₹1,000 maximum. Insured article = up to insured value, not exceeding actual value, maximum ₹5 lakh (April 2026). Consumer forum route: Speed Post sender is a consumer; actual market value can be awarded beyond postal ceiling with documentation. Damage complaint: must be filed within 2 days of receipt — post-2-day complaints lose the postal remedy (consumer forum route still available for 2 years).
