15 March 1983 · BIRTH
Born as Hirdesh Singh
Hirdesh Singh — later known as Yo Yo Honey Singh — was born in the residential locality of Karampura, Delhi, into a Sikh family originally from Hoshiarpur, Punjab. His father, Sarabjit Singh, and mother, Bhupinder Kaur (a spiritual healer), raised him alongside a younger sister, Sneha. From early childhood he played tabla and sang devotional songs at the local gurudwara and performed at spiritual events in his neighbourhood. In his teenage years he was drawn to the African-American slang term 'Yo Yo' — meaning 'one's own' — which his friends used, and he gradually adopted it as a prefix to his name. He completed schooling at Guru Nanak Public School, Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi, and later pursued a BSc in IT at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, before following his musical passion to the Trinity School of Music in London, where he studied sound engineering and music production. His early influences spanned Punjabi folk, hip-hop, and R&B — laying the foundation for the genre-blending sound that would make him one of India's most recognisable musicians.

Single 'Dope Shope' released
'Dope Shope', featuring Deep Money, was released as the lead single ahead of Honey Singh's debut studio album International Villager. The track was among the earliest examples of his signature sound — Punjabi folk inflections layered over Western hip-hop production with English-language hooks designed for club and college-circuit audiences. Released on Speed Records, it generated immediate buzz and set the tone for what would become a landmark album, demonstrating Singh's ability to fuse vernacular Punjabi sensibility with production techniques absorbed during his time studying in London.

Debut album 'International Villager' released
International Villager, Honey Singh's debut studio album, was officially released on 11 November 2011 — a date deliberately chosen for its symmetry (11-11-11). The 14-track album, released on Speed Records and Times Music, is widely regarded as one of the first Indian rap albums to achieve mainstream commercial success at scale. Singh had worked on the record for nearly four years alongside the Mafia Mundeer collective. It featured an extraordinary roster: Diljit Dosanjh on 'Goliyan', Gippy Grewal on 'Angreji Beat', J-Star on 'Gabru', Malkit Singh on 'Beautiful', Sardool Sikander on 'Yaadaan', Money Aujla on 'Aashke', and Manak Ali on 'Sambhle'. The production fused bhangra rhythms with trap hi-hats, R&B vocal runs, and hip-hop flows — transforming Singh from an underground producer into a household name overnight.

Single 'Gabru' released
'Gabru', featuring J-Star, was released as the second single from International Villager. The track topped the official BBC Asian Download Charts, marking a significant milestone for Punjabi hip-hop in the United Kingdom and signalling the genre's growing international reach within the South Asian diaspora. Its success on the BBC charts demonstrated that a Punjabi-language rap track with an underground hip-hop production aesthetic could compete with established Bollywood and bhangra acts on global digital platforms, cementing Singh's reputation as an artist with genuine cross-border appeal.

Single 'Angreji Beat' released
'Angreji Beat', a collaboration with Gippy Grewal, was released as a single from International Villager. The track would go on to achieve one of the most unusual trajectories in Indian music: originally a Punjabi album cut, it was licensed for Saif Ali Khan's Bollywood film Cocktail (2012), where its placement introduced it to an entirely new national audience. The resulting mainstream exposure is widely credited as the song that first brought Honey Singh to the attention of Bollywood producers, directly leading to the wave of high-value film collaboration offers that followed.

Single 'Goliyan' released
'Goliyan', featuring Diljit Dosanjh, was released as part of the continuing singles rollout from International Villager. The collaboration between Singh and Dosanjh — two of the most commercially potent names in Punjabi music — generated significant chart activity and continued to build momentum for the album well into its second month of release, demonstrating the unusual commercial longevity of the International Villager project. The track gave broad appeal across both Singh's urban hip-hop listener base and Dosanjh's established fanbase.

Music video for 'Brown Rang' released
The music video for 'Brown Rang' was released and became the single most significant moment in Honey Singh's early career. Written, composed and performed entirely by Singh — having been originally offered to Diljit Dosanjh who declined it as 'too futuristic' — the video became the most-watched on YouTube in India for the entire year of 2012, crossing 10 million views and eventually accumulating over 300 million. It simultaneously occupied the top spot on YouTube India's trending list while 'High Heels' (with Jaz Dhami) took fourth place, making Singh the only Indian artist to hold two positions in the top four that year. 'Brown Rang' was a cultural inflection point that established the template of the desi hip-hop music video and cemented his identity as both producer and frontman.

Mirza – The Untold Story, a Punjabi action-romance film directed by Baljit Singh Deo and based on the legendary love story of Mirza and Sahiba, was released on 6 April 2012. Honey Singh appeared in his first commercial acting role as Deesha — described as a 'dunce gangster' — a cameo that despite its brevity made a strong impression on Punjabi cinema audiences. The film starred Gippy Grewal and Mandy Takhar in the lead roles. Singh also composed the film's music. The movie had a historic opening across Punjab at the time of release. His performance as Deesha earned him the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Male Debut at the 3rd PTC Punjabi Film Awards in 2013 — recognising both his screen presence and the growing crossover of his music brand into acting.

Single 'Get Up Jawani' released
'Get Up Jawani' was released as a further single from International Villager, extending the album's commercial lifespan into its sixth month — an unusual achievement for a Punjabi debut record. By this point in 2012, Honey Singh had become the dominant force in commercial Punjabi music, and his production style — booming 808 bass, staccato Punjabi hooks, and English-language rap bridges — was already being widely imitated across the industry. The singles campaign effectively spanned nearly six months from November 2011 to April 2012, maintaining Singh's visibility throughout and setting a new standard for album rollout strategy in the Punjabi music industry.

BritAsia TV Music Awards — Best International Act
The BritAsia TV Music Awards 2012 ceremony was held at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham on 6 October 2012, hosted by Hardeep Singh Kohli. Honey Singh won the award for Best International Act — a significant recognition from the UK's South Asian music industry, which at the time was the largest diaspora market for Punjabi pop. The award reflected the extraordinary international reach his music had achieved through 'Brown Rang', 'Angreji Beat', and 'Gabru', all of which had topped or prominently featured on UK Asian charts within the previous year. This was one of the first major international institutional recognitions of his growing global profile.

'Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22' released — first lead acting role
Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, a Punjabi comedy film directed by Amit Prasher, was released on 25 January 2013. Honey Singh played Rolly — one of two spoiled rich brothers sent from Melbourne to Punjab by their exasperated father to learn the value of hard work and roots. The film starred Singh alongside Amrinder Gill, Mandy Takhar, and Wamiqa Gabbi. Singh also composed the film's music. It was his first genuine lead acting role — a step up from his cameo in Mirza — and the film performed well at the box office, earning a 'semi-hit' verdict. The production demonstrated Singh's ability to sustain a full-length comic performance, a different register from his stage persona.

Added to the film's score at the personal insistence of lead actor Shah Rukh Khan — outside the contracted work of the film's primary composers Vishal-Shekhar — the song became one of the biggest commercial hits of 2013 in Bollywood. It was one of the first instances of a rapper's track being inserted into a major Hindi film soundtrack by star power rather than conventional producer channels. The song significantly popularised Honey Singh among mainstream Hindi cinema audiences who had not previously followed Punjabi pop, and it remains one of his most-played tracks with over 60 million Spotify streams.

The Boss (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring Honey Singh's 'Party All Night', was released on 9 September 2013 on T-Series. The film starred Akshay Kumar and was directed by Anthony D'Souza. 'Party All Night' was among the most commercially successful tracks Singh contributed to Bollywood in 2013, but it also attracted controversy: a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court to stay the film's release over a word in the song's lyrics, with producers eventually submitting that the offending word had been muted. Singh denied the word was vulgar. The incident highlighted the scrutiny his lyrics were attracting at the peak of his Bollywood phase, even as demand for his compositions remained at its highest.

'Blue Eyes' was released as a standalone single on 8 November 2013 on T-Series. 'Blue Eyes' demonstrated Singh's versatility and his ability to operate in a more aspirational, global pop register alongside his rougher street rap identity. As of 2025, the song has surpassed 751 million views on YouTube, making it his most-viewed video — a remarkable longevity for a single that is now over a decade old.

He played Kenny Damania (KD), a music director and key suspect in a murder mystery set in 1960s Bollywood. The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics and underperformed at the box office. However, the soundtrack performed considerably better than the film itself. The role demonstrated Singh's ambition to extend his brand beyond music production to Bollywood stardom, though his subsequent acting ambitions would be interrupted by his health crisis and refocused toward Punjabi cinema thereafter.

The music video starred Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor. It became the first Indian music video to cross 200 million YouTube views, and as of 2025 has surpassed 700 million views, making it the second most-watched Honey Singh video of all time. 51 Glorious Days was released on 26 September 2025 on T-Series, making history as the first Indian album to release all 51 tracks simultaneously on a single day. Originally scheduled for 26 August 2025, it was delayed by one month for additional audio engineering, mixing, and mastering. The 2-hour-45-minute record features AP Dhillon on 'Aadat', Nora Fatehi on 'I'm So Rich', Bohemia on 'Sawaal Puchdi', Alfaaz on 'Compro', and Jyoti Nooran on 'Rangla Punjab', among many others. It spans multiple Punjabi dialects, Hindi, Bhojpuri, Haryanvi, and international sounds. Honey Singh described it as 'my life's biggest celebration — a musical reflection of my 21-year career.' It is the most ambitious single release of his career by any metric.

'My Story' World Tour opens — Dubai, Coca-Cola Arena
Yo Yo Honey Singh opened his My Story World Tour 2026 on 6 February 2026 at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai — a city of deep personal significance where 'Brown Rang', his defining breakthrough hit, was filmed against the backdrop of the Burj Khalifa. Organised by Blu Blood with support from Dubai Calendar, the concert was the first stop of a multi-city global tour billed as his 'musical autobiography — each show representing a chapter of my journey.' In pre-tour interviews with Gulf News, Singh spoke candidly about his transformation: 'I've changed as a human. I kept the best parts of myself and deleted the rest. I turned towards God, spirituality, friendship, love. I don't go to parties anymore. I make two songs a day, three beats a day.' The My Story tour marks the most globally ambitious live campaign of his career.
