Can a UPI screenshot alone prove that you paid a dealer?

The Simple Truth

A UPI screenshot is admissible evidence under Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023 Section 61 and is routinely accepted by consumer forums. It establishes: that a payment was made, the amount, the date and time, and the recipient UPI ID. But a screenshot alone does not establish what the payment was for. The complete evidential chain requires: the UPI screenshot + the WhatsApp or text conversation describing the item ordered + the seller's confirmation of the order. Together these prove both that payment was made and what it was for.

What a UPI screenshot proves

A UPI payment confirmation screenshot — whether from PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or any other UPI app — shows: the amount transferred, the date and time of the transaction, the recipient's name or UPI ID, and a transaction reference number (UTR — Unique Transaction Reference). Under BSA 2023 §61, this is an electronic record that constitutes admissible documentary evidence.

The UTR (Unique Transaction Reference number) is particularly valuable. It can be independently verified through NPCI's record of the transaction — a court or consumer forum can request verification from the bank that the UTR corresponds to a real transaction. This makes the UTR-confirmed UPI screenshot harder to challenge than a simple screenshot without reference verification.

What a UPI screenshot does not prove

The UPI screenshot does not prove what the payment was for. It proves a payment of ₹X was made to Y on date Z. It does not prove that the payment was for a specific ₹100 note with serial number AB 123456, in UNC condition, described as a star note. This is why the WhatsApp conversation is essential as a companion document to the UPI screenshot.

Together, the WhatsApp conversation (showing the specific item described, the price agreed, and the seller's confirmation) and the UPI screenshot (showing payment of the agreed amount on the agreed date) constitute a complete transaction record. Neither alone is sufficient. Both together are strong.

Bank statement as stronger corroboration

A bank statement extract showing the same UPI debit entry corroborates the screenshot. Bank statements are typically accepted as primary evidence in consumer forums without requiring additional authentication — they are official financial records issued by an IRDAI-regulated bank. A UPI screenshot + bank statement entry showing the same transaction are a well-authenticated evidential pair.

Judicial Authority Arjun Panditrao Khotkar v. Kailash Gorantyal · Supreme Court of India · (2020) 7 SCC 1

Under the old §65B IEA, electronic records required certificates from the person having custody of the device. Now superseded by BSA 2023 §63 which provides more practical authentication standards. The principle that electronic records must be authenticated before reliance remains — but BSA 2023 makes this more achievable. UPI screenshots with UTR numbers satisfy authentication requirements in most consumer forum proceedings.

Key Takeaway

UPI screenshot: admissible under BSA 2023 §61 as electronic record. Proves: payment amount, date, recipient, UTR. Does NOT prove: what the payment was for. Complete evidence: UPI screenshot + WhatsApp conversation describing item + seller's order confirmation. UTR can be independently verified. Bank statement entry corroborates screenshot. Consumer forums routinely accept this combination. Authentication: BSA 2023 §63 more practical than old §65B IEA; UTR verification satisfies standard.
